PDP on the verge of collapse

Published by

Many Nigerians were surprised when news of the resignation of seven Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National working committee was reported. It is instructive to note that the PDP  is one of the biggest parties with large members in Africa. Indeed, many stalwarts of the All Progressives Congress (APC) decamped from the PDP.

But the members should remember that he who lives in a glass house must be wary of throwing stones. Those who are preparing to leave PDP for other parties should not destroy it because they might still come back to that party.

The inherent danger posed by the recent resignation of seven National Working Committee members of PDP as a result of misunderstanding between prince Uche Secondus and national officers of the party can’t be listed.

For me, it is an internal political wrangling that needs political solution. The current emerging scenario is no doubt a sign that the crisis rocking the PDP has increasingly become a major threat to all their members across the country. Over the years, PDP through its powerful spokesman, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan has consistently criticised the Federal Government of Nigeria on the need to tackle insecurity and also to revamp the economy. The PDP’s constructive criticism has helped the Federal Government to know where they have made mistakes.

The root of the PDP crisis must be effectively tackled now before other strong members decamp because one party system is not good for Nigeria’s democracy. There must be an opposition party that will be saddled with the responsibility of checking the government in power. This is how democracy is practised in America. Nigerians can’t continue to be ruled by one political party. At this juncture, I think this is the right time for Senator Bukola Saraki and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola to wade into the matter by calling aggrieved members to a meeting; they should use their elderly wisdom, being former governors, to address the grievances before it is too late. The failure of PDP elders to act now might lead to the total collapse of the party.
