PDP governors from North, stakeholders hold crucial talks over party chair

Northern governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other party stakeholders from the region are ramping up efforts to produce a consensus candidate for the national chairmanship post of the party.

They converged, on Thursday, at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, brainstorming on how to select a candidate among the numerous individuals who have indicated interest to vie for the post.

The post has already been zoned to the North which also has the latitude of freedom to micro-zone to any of its geopolitical zones.

While the North-Central is backing former Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu, the North-West is lining up behind former Katsina State governor, Ibrahim Shema. The North-East is pushing for former Senate Leader, Abdul Ningi.

However, the National Deputy Chairman (North) of the PDP, Senator Suleiman Nazif, who is from the North-East, is insisting on running for the position irrespective of what other leaders are saying.

The meeting, hosted by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, was being attended by governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Sam Ortom (Benue), Darius Ishaku (Taraba), and Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa).

Former Senate presidents Bukola Saraki and Ayu; the National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Unaru Tsauri, are also in attendance as well as serving and former members of the National Assembly.
