The event which he stated was declared globally on October 5, 1966, had its root in the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and United Nation Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) recommendation and was unanimously adopted by the special intergovernmental conference of ministers of education of the member nations in Paris, France.

Speaking about the uniqueness of this year’s celebration, he lauded the leadership of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and indeed the state government for declaring every October 5, a work-free-day for teachers in Oyo State to join their teeming colleague in celebration all over the universe.

While applauding the efforts of Governor Oluseyi Makinde in the state’s education industry he said: “the executive governor of Oyo State has again passed our due diligence in key areas such as Teachers’ welfare, recruitment of teachers in public schools, approval of backlog of promotion, reduction in six years promotion waiting period of primary school teachers, among others.

He made an appeal to the government to recruit teachers in Oyo State public primary schools, make approval of funds for the payment schools’ running grants, issuance of primary school leaving testimonial to graduates of public primary schools and so forth.

National president of the NUT, Dr, Nasir Idris, who was represented at the event by the national council member, Mr Seye Obadina appreciated both the state and federal governments for identifying with teachers in Nigeria, particularly   for sustaining the president’s teachers and school excellence award aimed at promoting excellence in service among teachers, administrators and schools in Nigeria.

The vice chancellor of Lead City University, Professor Kabiru Adeyemo who represented the chairman, governing council, LCU, Professor Babajide while acknowledging indispensable role of teachers, in nation-building noted that “the development of every society is determined by the level of education of  its citizens which could only be guaranteed by professional teachers and good delivery.

While speaking on the theme of the conference, the former, NUT secretary, Mr Waheed Olojede charged the government on organising education summit, where parents would be educate on the need to wake up to their responsibilities in making the sacrifice towards giving their children qualitative education.

He recommended that the Teachers’ Day celebration should not only be celebrated at the primary and secondary levels, but unanimously at all levels, saying that “will encourage us to dwell on our strengths and work on our weaknesses.”
