THE Aare Mayegun of Ibadan Land, Chief Mustafa Adebayo Oyero, has charged government at all levels to see the civil service as the engine room of the government and do whatever it takes by way of training to rejuvenate the service, while not neglecting the honest advice and expertise of civil servants.
He noted that in the first republic and during the military era, the civil service was the brainwork of the government.
Chief Oyero spoke on the sidelines of the official presentation of his new book, Grace Unbounded: My life, My Service, last week in Ibadan.
Speaking further, the former president-general of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) said he was looking forward to a situation where the nation would go back to the era where the civil service would be able to perform its role as the engine room of the government, charging all the Ibadan citizens to show commitment and patriotism as regards public service so that Ibadan city could regain its old memory.
Speaking on the state of the nation generally, he said that he wished governance could be better, adding “this nation can be greater than what it is now, but there must be justice. There must be equity and we must operate as a family.”
He equally solicited for good governance in the country, saying “once we have good governance, no one will clamour for a break up.”
He called on those at the helm of affairs not to be self-centred, saying “our leaders should also not think of their personal interest alone but the overall interest of the country. When they are criticized, they shouldn’t take it personal; they should take it as an opportunity to lift and improve governance in the country.”
Speaking on his new book, the author said the book detailed his life as a civil servant, bureaucrat in the state, local government, federal services as well as his service to the community and Islamic religion.
While commenting about the author, Honourable Segun Ogunwuyi, the Chief of Staff to the Oyo State governor, Mr Seyi Makinde, who represented his principal at the event, testified to the author’s brilliance as an administrator, technocrat, philanthropist and proud Ibadan son.
He encouraged the youth to emulate the lifestyle of Chief Oyero and contribute their quota to the society so that Nigeria can grow as a nation.
Also speaking at the event, the chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Adeolu Akande, said Chief Oyero had lived a distinguished life, just as he expressed joy at the great turnout of people who graced the occasion to celebrate him on the feat.
In her remarks, a former Minister of Industry, Chief Onikepo Akande, noted that Chief Oyero had touched many lives in many positive ways, saying “His life is that of service and honour. He is a great family man, his wife, Alhaja Oyero, and his children can testify to this.”
The chairman of the organising committee, Mr Kola Bolomope in his comment stated that one of the experiences he would forever appreciate about Chief Oyero when putting the event together was the character of the author.
“His personality assisted this committee tremendously,” he said.
While speaking about her husband, Mrs Suruurah Oyero expressed her joy on the success of the book presentation and launch.
“I am pleased and very happy about the man I chose. He is not just a great man at home , but also in the society,” she said.
