Over 200 Ekiti secondary schools benefit from World Bank-assisted project

No fewer than 200 secondary schools across the 16 Local Government Areas of Ekiti state have benefitted from the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project being sponsored by the world bank in the state.

The AGILE project coordinator in Ekiti State, Mrs Yewande Adesua who spoke during an engagement with Heads of Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Parastatals in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, said that school boys were also being considered under the project in a bid to achieve the expected outcome.

Adesua while speaking said that secondary schools in the state benefited in the area of provision of modem learning equipment, construction of toilets, classrooms, provision of instructional materials, and training of teachers, among others.

She noted that under the Gender-Based Violence(GBV) scheme of the project, sanitary pads have been distributed to adolescent girls, and Anti GBV clubs have also been inaugurated in some selected schools.

She added that community stakeholders have been trained on the danger and implications of violence against girl children, saying that the $25 million released by the world bank for the project is being deployed judiciously.

According to her, AGILE provided an accessible, inclusive and conducive environment for teaching and learning in secondary schools through the small school improvement grants, used for the renovation of dilapidated buildings and the construction of gender-friendly toilets in public secondary schools across the state.

While reiterating the government’s readiness to achieve the desired results of ensuring every girl child is enrolled in school towards reducing the number of out-of-school children in society.

On her part, the permanent secretary, ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr Folakemi Olomojobi explained that the interactive event was to collaborate with MDAs and parastatals on how to improve on execution of AGILE programmes in Ekiti State and create synergy with other relevant stakeholders.

The head of service, Bamidele Agbede noted that the interactive programme was a welcome development, that will educate the head of government agencies, ministries, Departments and parastatals across the state on the need to key into the project.

Agbede noted that the AGILE project is targeted at promoting girls’ education and empowerment as well as preventing gender-based violence in the state.
