Our alumni are doing very well in their areas of callings, says UI Ag VC

The Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Babatunde Ekanola, has said the alumni of the premier university are doing very well in their areas of callings.

Professor Ekanola made the declaration at the vice chancellor’s office when members of the Economics Class of 1990 of the institution paid him a courtesy visit on Friday, August 27.

He noted with pride that despite being economists, members of the Class 1990 were doing excellently well in accounting, information technology, in the business sector, and in various walks of life.

The courtesy visit was part of activities toward the donation of over N20 million worth of books to the Department of Economics by Professor Francis Gbenga Fashanu an alumnus of the department, in collaboration with some members of the Economics Class of 1990 in loving memory of his late father, Stephen Adebisi Fashanu.

Representatives of the Class 1990 at the event were Tola Olomitola, Wole Ogundinmu, Adebisi George Ojo, Honourable Yemi Akinlabi, Sulaimon Olalere and Biodun Balogun.

The acting vice chancellor’s words: “I find this to be very significant and also very encouraging, and because you have deemed it fit to come back and to give back is something that’s very much appreciated.

“I also took note that the textbooks you’re donating will be very much useful not just for the department of Economics, but for other departments within the new faculty. Because you have texts in the areas of Accounting, Marketing, Auditing, Corporate Finance and Investment, and that’s very thoughtful.

“Thank you for the donation of the books because getting the texts here would have cost a lot of money.”

In his address during the official presentation of the books, at the Large Auditorium, Afribank Building, Department of Economics, Head of Department of Economics, Professor Adeola Adenikinju, said the books would boost future accreditation of the department by the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other professional bodies like the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

The Dean Faculty of Economics and Management Studies, Professor O. Aregbeyen, in his remarks said the quality and quantity of the books would greatly enrich the faculty library.

Speaking to journalists after the event, Professor Francis Fashanu who is a professor at Sheridan College, Canada, said: “The motivation behind it is to give back because we gained so much from this university. Whatever we are today is because of the foundation that is laid for us here at the university. We need to give back so that those who are coming behind us will have a better future.”
