The world is a theatre of politics filled with drama. And in drama, while everyone is important including the audience who will cheer the actors, there are dramatis personae, the actors. The role of actors is as important as the role of the audience. However, no one will retire as an audience in any space of life, only those who are actively involved in the scheme of things can be seen to retire.
No matter how small the role is, it is the desire of everyone to be important in important things because nobody praises the spectator or the audience but those who are involved in an act.
Politics is not in exemption; the political arrangement brought by the Late Sani Abacha has opened the eyes of everyone in Nigeria to the issue of zoning, he dismembered Nigeria into six geo-politics; the Southwest, Northwest, Northeast, North Central, Southeast and South-South. This singular arrangement makes agitation easy in Nigeria’s politics exigency which has trickled to the states in Nigeria as any other arrangements are mere sitting room arrangements.
The political imbalance has affected every state of the federation and in Osun State, the case is not different as there are zones that are forgotten in the scheme of things, Osun West is one of such and at present, it is about to be forgotten and deprived again.
In the last gubernatorial election, the common word on the street is ‘Osun West Lokan’ meaning, it is the turn of Osun West to rule and this was why Osun people voted en mass for the candidate of the West, Senator Ademola Adeleke.
Since its creation in 1991, the political history of Osun State shows clearly that Osun Central has been dominating all other senatorial districts. It will be recalled that all states in the federation are divided into three senatorial districts. This is for easy planning and political development. In Osun State; we have Osun Central, Osun East and Osun West but Osun Central has been having a field day as far as governorship seat is concerned. In 1999, Osun Central took the lead with Chief Bisi Akande, from Ila-Orangun, to another ruler from Osun Central, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, followed by Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.
osun West is the only zone that has continually been sidelined by the political class in Osun State and is politically stagnated; perhaps, this is the reason many are shouting that Osun West should have their own turn. There is a need to go by way of equity, fairness and justice for Osun West to govern the state.
The only voice the electorate have is their voters’ card. It is their voice and power in any truly democratic setting. One of the tenets and pivots upon which democracy rotates and revolve are free and fair election devoid of intimidations and harassment by anyone.
This coming election, there is a cry for justice and it is the turn of Osun West.
