OPC lost more than 3,000 members to struggle between 1998 and 2005 ― Gani Adams

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has revealed that the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) lost more than 3,000 members to struggle between 1998 and 2005.

Adams who is the National Coordinator of the group made this known during the presentation of grinding machines to the wives and widows of its fallen heroes and heroines courtesy of the Odua Progressive Union (OPU) of Canada Chapter on Tuesday in Lagos.

Adams noted that the affected members were gruesomely murdered and attacked majorly by the Nigerian Police.

He explained that the loss was in agitation for the defence of the group’s aims and objectives of defending the interests of the Yoruba people, fostering unity amongst them.

Adams, therefore, stated that it is the main reason why the group set aside November 8 to honour its fallen heroes.

“I would trace the struggle to the reason we founded Oodua People’s Congress in 1994.

“It was founded to defend the interest of the Yoruba people, to foster unity amongst the Yoruba people and to use the organisation to agitate for true federalism in the federal republic of Nigeria.

“And in the process, there was a lot of provocations from the state. Between 1998 to 2005, we lost more than 3,000 of our members.

“Many were gruesomely murdered in unprovoked attacks from the Nigerian Police majorly.

“Consequently, we usually used November 8 of every year to remember our fallen heroes,” he stated.
