Onga cooking competition produces new top Chef

AN undergraduate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Bibian Ugwumba, has been crowned winner of the 2021 ONGAlicious Next Top Chef Cooking Competition, organised by Onga Seasoning brand, from the stables of Promasidor.

Bibian emerged as the overall winner of the 4th edition of the cooking competition, designed to offer hope for thousands of youths in over 30 universities Pan-Nigeria.

The company, in a statement, explained that the  culinary competition was flagged off in May, this year, with the aim of identifying the most promising chefs across higher institutions in Nigeria, and also supporting the future generation of ‘foodpreneurs’.

The final cooking competition, held recently, in Lagos, saw the emergence of Bibian as overall winner of a N500,000 grand prize, while Joan Azonobor and Rita Okon, won the sums of  N300,000 and N200,000, as first and second runners-up respectively.

The trio were drawn from ten finalists, and were judged based on their creativity, speed, hygiene, taste, and overall outlook of their meals.

The ten finalists were selected from the first round of cooking competitions held in their respective schools, and were empowered with a week-long fully-sponsored course on food entrepreneurship at Red Dish Chronicles, a foremost culinary school.

The eventual winner, Bibian, had earlier expressed delight that her participation in the competition had further bolstered her confidence in cooking.

‘’Onga has really been so helpful to me since I came in contact with the brand. The competition has really helped me hone my cooking skills,’’ she stated.
