Ondo doctors begin two-day warning strike over assault on colleague

Resident Doctors at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) Teaching Hospital, Ondo State, on Wednesday, embarked on a two-day warning strike over the attack on one of them by patients.

One of the doctors was beaten to coma by relatives of a patient at the Accident and Emergency Department of the hospital while discharging his duty.

The resident doctors explained that a member of the association, identified as Dr Sayo was attacked by a relative of a patient while being treated in the hospital.

It was gathered that the relative of the patient attacked the Doctor for not attending to the aged patient on time.

It took the intervention of operatives of the Amotekun Corps before Dr Sayo could be rescued from his attacker.

However, the doctors who staged peaceful protests in Ondo and Akure simultaneously described the attack as barbaric and called on the state government to provide adequate security in the hospital premises to prevent a repeat of the ugly incident.

Speaking, the President of the Association of Resident Doctors, John Matthew said the attack on his colleague was uncalled for.

He said, “It is sad that we have found ourselves in this precarious situation. Over 100 staff have left the hospital, thereby creating a burden for us.

“We implore the state government to employ more doctors to address the problem. We also want the government to provide adequate security in the hospital premises”

Also speaking, Ibidapo Bolayemi, said the hospital is understaffed, noting that over 150 doctors have left the hospital in the last few months, while less than 45 doctors have been attending to patients.

She said the doctors are faced with the burden to deliver and urged the state government to employ more doctors.
