Some workers of the Wewood Company in Ondo Industrial Park, Ore of Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State have been apprehended for discharging harmful effluents into the land and water bodies of their host community.
The company and workers were found to have violated the state’s environmental protection agency law by discharging harmful effluents into land and water bodies which posed a great health risk to their host community.
The company was alleged to have initially denied the allegations, but the video evidence on a spot of the arrest showed that the company and its workers discharged the harmful effluents on regular basis.
It was gathered that the company had allegedly made it a habit of discharging harmful effluents in high volume regularly.
Speaking on the development, the Special Adviser to Ondo State Governor on Environment, Hon. Oyeniyi Oseni said it became necessary to caution the company as it had failed to comply with the environmental law.
According to him, the check on the company is to check the disturbing growing trend of environmental degradation and pollution in some parts of the state.
He said, “after our findings, Wewood was found to have violated the Ondo State Environmental Protection Agency Law Chapter 50, Section 22 of 1993.”
“We had earlier this year visited Wewood to authenticate the report of its pollution actions but they denied, we are using this medium to caution industrial companies and other facilities to comply with the State Environmental Protection Agency laws.
“Our mission is to make the State cleaner, healthier and livable for all.
“Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN is committed to ensuring a safer, secured and sustainable environment.
“We are extending the operation to other areas because it’s an ongoing exercise that will be sustained.”
He said the Wewood risks closure of their facility and huge fine among other environmental control mechanisms.
