Treating people unequally can lead to chaos and hostility in the society. As they say, what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
I as a person am vehemently opposed to the stance of the Governing Council of the University of Ibadan in exempting graduands of the institution who were not on the first class grade from the just concluded convocation ceremony.
The truth of the matter is that many of these students had made a lot of efforts to study and graduate. Naturally, they made various classes of grades following their academic activities over the years. So, why would the authorities of the institution deprive them of their civic rights under the guise of maintaining the rules of social distancing that did not stop them from sitting together in the same examination halls?
The prerogative of mercy should have been given to the other graduands who were unable to meet up with first class requirements, rather than grouping them with those students who may have played truancy throughout the course of their studies.
Nobody is raising an objection to celebrating the students who had distinguished themselves from other students through their scholarly activities. But the other students who had also tried their best should not have been sidelined.
I, therefore, implore the authority of the institution to desist from adopting despicable policies that will cause divisions among students and breed animosity.
