On the kidnap of Birnin-Yauri students

Published by

The recent kidnapping of some students of the Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri in Yauri Emirate of Kebbi state by yet to be identified bandits is clearly unthinkable and totally reprehensible. I was very sad as a parent to hear another bad news that our students who were preparing for their West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and Junior Examination to SSI have been kidnapped.

Nigeria is no longer safe for Nigerian students to learn. The tight security expected to be given to students by the Federal Government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari is nonexistent. The students no longer have courage to stay in their various schools out of fear of being kidnapped by the bandits and Nigerians both home and abroad are really worried because of incessant kidnapping of students.

The international community is also watching and hoping that the Federal Government with its security agencies headed by the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Baba Ahmed Alkali and the new Chief of Army staff, Major General Farouq Yahaya will see the need to act in the best interest of our loving students.

These students are Nigeria’s future. What is the offence of these students that they are continuously kidnapped? Is it a crime to be a student in a boarding school in Nigeria? The fact is that kidnapping of students is indeed criminal and unacceptable and should be treated as such. No Nigerian leader experienced kidnapping during their days in the secondary school.

I see no reason why the government should not take urgent steps towards providing adequate security for our students so as to prevent a future occurrence.  The Federal Government should do all that is required to protect the lives of our students.
