On rotation of presidency

Published by

The grouping of Nigeria into six geo-political zones is a very lofty idea and Nigerians should allow the lofty idea to be put into meaningful practice as regards the office of the Nigerian President. Every zone in the country should have access to the political leadership of the country. Since there is no geo-political zone that does not have qualified people who could be elected into the post of the President of Nigeria, the Presidency should be rotated among the six geo-political zones.  All Nigerians, irrespective of zones of origin should embrace the aphorism that “what belongs to all of us should be shared by all of us.”

Since Nigeria returned to democratic governance in 1999, three of the six geo-political zones have tasted the presidency; South –West (1999 to 2007), North – West (2007 to 2009 and 2015 till date) and South – South (2009 to 2015). Three zones; South -East, North – Central and North – East are still waiting for their respective turns.

All things being equal, the South – East Zone should be allowed by other zones of the country to have a taste of the presidency from 2023 to 2031. Thereafter, it should be the turn of the North – Central from 2031 to 2039 and the North-East from 2039 to 2047.

It is high time we loved our country and one another as indigenes of Nigeria. If we make the mistake of depriving the South – East zone from producing the president of Nigeria in 2023, I can accurately predict the end of the country as a united one.

Deacon Dapo Omotoso,

Ado Ekiti.
