WHEN I saw Liquorose and Whitemoney standing side-by-side, awaiting Ebuka Obi-Uchendu’s announcement of who the winner of the sixth season of Big Brother Naija would be, I knew by statistics that she had a twenty per cent chance of being announced winner. In the prior five seasons of one of Nigeria’s most-watched television shows, only one woman, Mercy Eke, had been announced winner.
It seems that millions of Nigerians, given the choice, prefer to put a man in a winning position. We can compare it to when political aspirants put themselves forward for political office in this country. The men are taken more seriously than the women at the primaries stage; talk less of the flag bearer stage.
Why are a lot of Nigerians so afraid of putting women in winning positions, given the choice? The answer is simple: it crushes the male ego. How dare Liquorose strut around with N90M in prizes while men are looking for employment? After all, Nigerians are used to seeing male heads of state and presidents, male CEOs and “ogas at the top”.
What is even more ironic is that I’m sure some Nigerians who have voted for Big Brother Naija male winners are women! Change is feared sometimes and these women might not want to upset the apple cart of “how things have always been” by pushing to have one of their own in a winning spot. Who knows the emotional abuse going on in some households if by votes a woman is voted Big Brother Naija winner? Any slight act can be misconstrued by the male abuser as “Is it because Liquorose won you’re feeling big?” A statement very similar to “Is it because I don’t have money you’re disrespecting me?”
Nigerian men who abuse their female partners or counterparts because of their perceived physical strength need to concentrate on making more money (if that will help them feel better), contribute what they have either financially (in the case of a home) or professionatlly (in the case of a business environment) and be satisfied that they’ve done their best, and cheer on the women in their lives who are succeeding. Women take whatever you give them, multiply it and give it to you back, so if men support them they’ll return this support bigger.
