Oluwo canvases death penalty for kidnappers, ritualists, others

Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, on Tuesday, agitated the death penalty for kidnappers in the country.

Oluwo who made the agitation at a summit organised to end conflicts between the Fulani and herders in the state argued that if this step is taken, the spate of kidnappings in the country would be reduced.

Oba Adewale stressed that the same death penalty should be applicable to ritualists.

According to him, there are wild animals and wolves among humanity and that is why “those ones should be treated with no mercy.

“If the death penalty is enforced by the concerned authorities, you will see changes in the country.

“The death penalty is enforced in China, Singapore, Israel, Saudi Arabia and in other countries and they are living peacefully there.

“There are wolves in human skins among human beings. Kill whoever that kills and whosoever that steals the country’s money should be made to face firing squad irrespective of tribes.

“There must be a death penalty for kidnappers and no human rights advocate should kick against that. Government must begin to kill corrupt people irrespective of ethnicity, they could be Fulani Hausa, Yoruba or any tribes.

“If the security force enforces the law, there would no longer be anarchy, ritualists, corrupt people, kidnappers.”

The royal father, however, called for the recruitment of more policemen, community policing, granting of constitutional roles to traditional rulers and devolution of powers concentrated at the centre.

“Security challenges would be significantly solved if the government gives traditional rulers constitutional power. I also prefer devolution of power, not restructuring. Then we also need State Police.

“Government must recruit more policemen. Nigeria must become a police state,” Oluwo stated.

Oba Adewale who admonished the Fulani who live in Iwo to work with constituted authority and traditional rulers to identify criminals who were penetrating their ranks, further said “I want you to work with me to identify criminals penetrating your ranks so that I would not join those who are calling for your expulsion in the South-West.

“You would chase the criminals always by working with the chiefs, and security agencies. I still stand by my words that Fulani should come and stay in Iwo, but I don’t want criminals because we can identify with them,” he said.

In his own submission, the chairman of the event, Osun State governor, Mr Gboyega Oyetola, assured that in a few weeks time, the government would put a stoppage to open grazing in the state.

The governor said necessary steps would be put in place to see that ranching is well embraced in the state in order to allow peace reign between the herders and the farmers.

Oyetola who was represented by Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Adewole Adedayo, maintained that the right things would be put in order to ensure farmers and herders live together in peace in the state.

Also, the guest lecturer of the day, the Akire of Ikire-Ile, Oba Olatunbosun, charged both the farmers and herders to always uphold, justice, love and equity for peace to reign in their circle.

He equally charged them to shun any act that could lead to conflicts between them, saying it is only in peace that remarkable achievements could be recorded in any given society.

In his own submission, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Olawale Olokodo charged both farmers and herders to live in peace and tolerate each other for the betterment of the state.

Speaking on behalf of the farmers, Prince Isiaka Abimbola, stated that many farmers took loans with interests from banks to set up their farms and at the end of the day they would be at loss because of herders’ invasion and destruction of the farms.

He, however, maintained that all wrongs in that aspect should be righted in no distance time.

Also, the Seriki of Fulani, Momonu Adamu, charged the government to educate them on ranching, saying “it is strange to us.” He also promised that Fulani’s would live in peace with farmers in the state.
