Oke-Ado High School ’87 set renovates block of classrooms

The old students association of the Oke-Ado High School, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, have expressed its readiness to complement the efforts of the government towards the infrastructural development of the school.

The president of the ’87 set of the school, Mr Qasim Abiodun, gave the assurance at the commissioning of the renovated block of six classrooms embarked upon by the set in the school.

He said members of the set went into the project because of the level of decay of infrastructure in public schools in the state.

According to him, “Due to the high level of deterioration being experienced in public schools, the 1987 set decided to be the local champions by contributing our own quota to the school’s development, thereby complementing government’s efforts and parents’ assistance in our alma mater.

“We decided to take the bull by the horn, by first embarking on the complete flooring of six classrooms. This project turned out to make 1987 set the pacesetters. This is because; it opened the eyes of other sets to why it’s important to give to our alma mater. In this case, 1988 set donated sets of reading furniture and the 1989 set embarked and completed the renovation of a block of six classrooms and the long balcony at the upper floor.

“Furthermore, the Pentaneer, an association of first five sets of this school, that is, 1985 to 1989, which started the construction of a block of 14 modern toilets about two years ago, has also completed the project.

“Not wanting to be pushed to the background, the pacesetter set, 1987, decided to come back again and complete the renovation of the block of six classrooms and the long balcony on the ground floor”.

Abiodun added that apart from infrastructural development, the set also embarked on capacity building for the students by teaching them the art of paint making.

He said the gesture was to prepare the beneficiaries for the challenges ahead and enable them to contribute to the economic development of the society.

The zonal coordinator, Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mr Ade Onifade, lauded the ’87 set of the school for the initiative, encouraging them to do more for the school that prepared them for the future.

Onifade, however, charged the current students to make good use of the infrastructure, noting that lack of maintenance was partly responsible for the infrastructural decay in the public schools.
