NURTW: Large turnout as Agbede holds inaugural meeting, rolls out incentives

There was a massive turn out of National Union Of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) members from nearly all the states at the National headquarters of the union in Abuja on Thursday to grace the first Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting of Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede-led national executives.

The NURTW CWC is made up of all the state chairmen, secretaries, all six zonal chairmen and secretaries.

Speaking on the turnout, the Acting General Secretary, Comrade Kayode Agbeyangi explained that attendance registration indicated that 29 states (80%), including all southwest states, were represented at the meeting, describing it as a sign of acceptance by the vast majority of members across the country.

“I want to thank all of you for coming here today. This is the official headquarters of the union. So, don’t go to any other place to do any union transaction apart from here. We are in majority and I am very sure those that those who are not here today will later see reason and come back home,” he said.

In his speech, the Acting President, Agbede, said his administration will operate an open door policy where all the members are welcome.

He used the opportunity to roll out his programs for members which include ensuring “that all the five southwest states forced out by Baruwa-led administration returned back to the union. To also ensure the NURTW liaise with the federal government on some of its programs, especially the fuel subsidy palliatives so members across the country can be beneficiary. To also put in place program to boost staff and members welfare. And for the former leaders, he said he would create a program to take care of their welfare.”

Meanwhile, members of the union in attendance advised the new leadership to learn one or two lessons from the mistakes of the Baruwa-led administration.
