The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has called for detailed and proper investigation into the killings of both 22 travellers and 77 Irigwe villagers in Jos, Plateau State, in order to unravel the misery and possible connection between the two incidents.
Specifically, the pensioners said the government should beam its searchlight on the circumstances surrounding the emergence of the 22 travellers in Jos North Local Government, rather than plying through the federal highways, especially on the date the burial of 77 villagers earlier killed by unknown people was taking place.
The union gave an indication that there could be a connection between the murder of the 77 villagers, who were being buried on that day and the movement of the 22 killed.
Though the NUP said it condemned the killing of the 22 travellers, it said the earlier killing of the 77 villagers that went unreported should also be investigated in the context of the killing of the 22 travellers.
In a statement titled: ‘The NUP condemns the murder of 22 travellers along Jos road, call for proper investigation,” and signed by the Secretary-General of the Union, Elder Actor Zal said: “We condemn this dastardly acts and call on the government to investigate the matter in order to get to the root cause of the matter and put an end to the incessant killings in the country.
“Equally important, we want the government to beam its searchlight on the circumstances surrounding the emergence of these travellers in Jos North Local Government, instead of plying through the federal highways, especially as it coincides with the burial date of the slain 77 villagers in Irigwe Village. We, therefore, call for a total investigation of all, immediate and remote causes of these incidents.”
He added: “The Nigeria Union of Pensioners condemns in totality the murder of 22 travellers in Jos, Plateau State. The travellers were commuting between Bauchi State and Akure in Ondo State.
“This action is barbaric, satanic and should be condemned by all and sundry. There is no justifiable reason whatsoever for anyone to take the life of another person. This retrogressive act is gradually returning our nation back to the old ’Hobbesian’ state of nature, where life is brutish, nasty and short.”
