The National Orientation Agency (NOA) chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, was agog as the chapel held its maiden Press Week, on Wednesday, at the NUJ Council Secretariat.
The event which commenced, on Monday, July 19, 2021, featured visitation to an orphanage; Mother Louisa Charity Home at Udi-Siding Enugu.
The Chapel decided to embark on such a visit as a way of giving back to society during Press Week.
Addressing the management of the orphanage, the Chairman of NOA NUJ Chapel, McDonald Odenigbo, encouraged them to continue their good works in caring for and saving the lives of people.
He later presented gift items from the chapel to the orphanage home to support the children under their care and prayed to God to strengthen them in their good works.
The Management, while accepting the items, thanked the chapel for showing such care.
The event climaxed, on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, on a different tone as the grand finale of the Maiden Press Week, with lectures and awards ceremony under the theme, “COVID-19: Dealing With Socio-Economic Aftermath.”
Some Secondary Schools; Grace Land College, Jose Maria Academy and Goshen Stars College were invited to the event.
Dr Adaobi Nwoye, a resource person and lecturer at Enugu State University Of Science and Technology, (ESUT), in her speech, advised the audience to take precautions against contracting the virus, by washing hands with sanitisers, making use of nose masks and observing social distancing.
Hon Ibekaku Ono representing Enugu-North in the State House of Assembly who chaired the occasion asked everyone to believe that COVID-19 is real and to take precautionary measures to avoid getting it.
He also encouraged people that had not taken the vaccine to do so at the government-approved health centres.
Maureen Atuonwu Zonal Director News Agency Of Nigeria (NAN), advised people to desist from the misinformation on the social media discouraging people from taking the vaccine for the virus and enjoined them to endeavour to take it and keep to the COVID-19 precautions.
The Special Guest Speaker, Prof Joy Ezilo, a scholar cum activist, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Women’s Aid Collective, (WACOL), encouraged women to speak out and report to the right agency and or organizations when sexually harassed or maltreated to help put an end to the high rate of rape and ill maltreatment of women.
The woman activist, who was clad significant in black from head to toe suggesting a mourning mood got tongues wagging on the account of her attire as she had been in the vanguard of women rightists who condemn such mourning of spouse as some kind of ill-treatment of widows.
She, however, advised students to always be close to their parents, confiding their problems to them and to be focused on their studies to excel high academically.
Speaking, the President Nigeria Union Of Journalists, Christopher Isiguzo, through Kenneth Ofoma, NUJ South-East Zonal Secretary and acting Zonal Vice President, applauded NOA NUJ for their good works in disseminating information, sensitising people on government policies and programmes and for organising this Press Week.
He encouraged them to keep on to their good works.
Honours and Recognitions were given to six persons; Hon. Barrister Franklin Udemezue, Chairman Oji River LGA, Chief Maurice Emeka Akueme; Maurice Akueme Foundation, Chief Ikeje Asogwa; Ide Na Iheaka, Chairman, ENSUBEB, Pastor David Emeka Nwachukwu; Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, I-Connect Zion Garden Estate Limited, Isaac Onukwube; Immediate Past Director, NOA Enugu State, and Christopher Isiguzo President, NUJ.
Speaking for one of the awardees, Mrs Amaka Ozougwu, a caterer and member of the Maurice Akueme Foundation, expressed delight at the honour done to Chief Maurice Akueme by the NUJ NOA chapel.
A visibly elated Amaka said the honoured was well deserved “because of the good deeds he has done for people in Enugu State and in Nigeria.”
Describing Chief Akueme as a UK based philanthropist, owner and president of the Maurice Akueme Foundation that has been engaged in the alleviation of poverty and health issues through the gift of free medicare and palliatives, she averred that “he really round alleviating and palliating people especially during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.”
She explained that on account of his philanthropy, he had received several awards including the Njikokanma of Enugu which was personally given to him by “Executive Governor Enugu State, RtHon Dr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi himself.”
