NUJ commends military for security efforts

Published by

National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade, Christopher Isiguzo has called on all Nigeria’s to take up security as their personal business by providing intelligence to the military in the country.

He said this become imperative because no Nigerian was immune from the attacks and insecurity that are caused by bandits and insurgents.

He noted that without the efforts of the military, many Nigerians would have been displaced and become refugees in a foreign land.

He said this when he played host to the director of communication for the Nigerian Air Force Commodore, Edward Gabkwet and his team at the national secretariat in Abuja.

Isiguzo told Commodore Gabkwet that the Nigerian media does the same work as the military in terms of nation-building except that each has its role and must stick to it.

He pointed out that information is critical in winning the insecurity in the nation but the call for partnership between the military and the public especially journalists who get information from all sources.

“We are partners and have one objective, though you assess these objectives differently.

“It is important that we must appreciate each others role because, if we undermine what you do, it will be difficult for us to achieve that set goal. In the same vein, if you undermine what we do, it is difficult for you to achieve the set goal.

“Most time we keep battling the issue of we versus them, again you ask, who are we and who are they? We are all one Nigeria. Trying to build a saner clime, a safe environment for us all.

Nobody is immune from insurgency, your officers are not immune; journalists we are not immune nor are the ordinary people out there, all of us are facing the same thing, therefore, the business of security is everybody business.

“Sometimes a journalist witnesses an event first hand and all he needs to do will be to get an official position so that nobody will blame us. what you now hear is a totally different thing.

“That will put you in a very tight corner your view of saying the right thing is indeed a welcome development.

He said maintaining the truth help us to discharge our responsibilities. If you have not been doing what you are doing we would have probably we would have become a refugee in another country.

Gabwet said the essence of the meeting was to promote partnership with journalists to promote national cohesion while the truth is upheld.

He noted such a partnership will help dispel the challenge of nation-building.
