Boys start producing spermatozoa (or sperm, for short) at the onset of puberty. Puberty starts at different times for different people. Boys usually start puberty when they’re around 10 or 12 years old, though some start a little sooner and others a little later. At 18, therefore, you should have started producing sperm. Your inability to do so could be due to infections or inflammatory conditions. One example is infection with the mumps virus after puberty. Other factors could be hormone or pituitary gland problems as well as immune problems where you make antibodies against your own sperm. Other causes are environmental and lifestyle factors. These include tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, marijuana or steroid use, or exposure to toxins. In addition, anything that blocks the genital tract can stop the flow of semen. This could be a genetic or birth defect. The only way to know the actual cause of your problem as well as the treatment is for you to see a specialist doctor at the nearest Teaching or Specialised hospital to you.
