No reprieve yet for Magu

Published by

The battle of supremacy between the Directorate of State Security (DSS) and the embattled acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu may not abate soon as Sunday Tribune exclusively gathered that the agency is set to release more damning reports on him.

It was learnt that the DSS still has more reports on the embattled acting EFCC boss  and would be released to the public should Magu  fault or deny the 12 security documents belonging to the EFCC  it found in the residence of a retired military officer.

“We have just released to the Presidency 12 documents which exposed the activities of Magu as the acting chairman of the EFCC and we are waiting for him to deny those documents before we hit him,” the source stated.

Sunday Tribune also gathered that one of the reports, which the security agency is still holding from the public, has to do with alleged activities of a brother of a serving minister in the oil sector and how it involved the EFCC.

There is a report on how the actors in the industry were blackmailed and made to part with millions of dollars, while a brother of the serving minister acted as the intermediary between the unsuspecting  operators and the EFCC leadership.

It was gathered that more damaging reports on Magu and how he ran the agency as a private property are in the kitty of the DSS, one of which is the linking of two mansions in Maitama area in Abuja to him, which was made public yesterday .

The oil industry deal was said to have been burst through the monitoring of telephone conversations between Magu and the brother of a serving minister at the point of collection of the said money.

It was reliably gathered that the service decided to hold on to some of the damaging  reports because of the backlash it would have on the entire government.

Sources at the DSS confided in Sunday Tribune that “ we have to take all this steps to ensure that Magu is not made the substantive chairman of the EFCC because he is not fit for the sensitive job. If we don’t point this out now and the Senate goes ahead to clear Magu, Buhari might not be there in 2019.

“ An opposition party or member of the APC who does not like the face of Buhari might take over government and then use the report against the erstwhile administration, so we have to advice the president right and as well protect his integrity in or out of office.

…Senate has been vindicated —Senate spokesman
Senator  Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, has said the leaked report of the Directorate of State Security (DSS) sent to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), on the integrity of the EFCC boss, Mr. Ibrahim Magu has vindicated the decision of the legislative chamber to reject his nomination as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Senate spokesman in a statement  claimed that: “Following several calls made to me today by journalists seeking my comments on the leaked report on Mr  Ibrahim Magu, which was more damning than the one submitted to us, I can only say that the senator  has been vindicated.

“From that report, which is now in  public, it is obvious the DG SSS tried to give Magu soft landing in the report that was sent to the Senate. The recent report is messier and showed that our decision not to confirm his nomination was right.

“We therefore call on all Nigerians to continue to have full confidence and trust on the Nigerian Senate as it discharges its responsibilities according to the letter and spirit of the Nigerian constitution,” he stated.
