Afro pop singer and songwriter, Paul Toghanro, otherwise known as Paulachino, is fast becoming one of the industry’s emerging music stars. While his music started in Cyprus, Paulachino soon realised he has to build his fan base from home hence his return to Nigeria. The singer who is also into modelling, speaks about being a rising force and life outside music with SEGUN ADEBAYO.
In a short time, you have been getting a lot of attention in the music industry and you seem to be making every moment count for you. How would you describe the music journey so far?
I will say the journey has been smooth and rough but I am enjoying the ride. It’s not easy as an independent artiste but the journey has been amazing because I got amazing people around me who show me love, support and believe in my craft. These people have helped me to get along on this music journey. I am happy about the attention but I think I would rather focus on my growth and keep pushing.
What prepared you for music and how much influence does your background have on your career?
What prepared me for music are basically the people around me. It feels really good knowing that some people will always be there for you, especially those who understand and appreciate your style. My style is unique and I am actually putting in more efforts into my craft and preparing myself for the big moment ahead of me. I have been hearing people saying that my sound is cool and I have what it takes to be where I am today and beyond. My background helps me a lot because it inspires my lyrics, style and sound. What you hear from me today or see on your screens are a reflection of where I was coming from and how much work has gone into the making of this man called Paulachino and that’s just me showing the world what I have.
Has music always been what you wanted to do?
Yes, I have always loved music. My life has revolved around music since I was young and the passion has been growing very strong. It is not something that just happened overnight. I have always been a fan of music and I believe I am on the right path. Right now I have not attained the level that I want to be hence the need for me to keep moving to attain the level that I deserve. While I appreciate the growth and attention coming my way, I am channeling all my energy into my music and ensuring that no one beats me to my game.
Coming into the music and staying relevant are two different things. How do you feel about the level you have attained right now?
I intend to reach out to more people to get to know my style of music and feel the positive energy I am feeling from my music. People say they feel a kind of positive wave from my music and that they always relate well to my songs. This is the true message I always try to communicate to the people with my songs. I am really enjoying the progression.
How long has it been on this journey and what were your winning moments in the music business?
The music industry in Nigeria is huge. It is so huge that you have to keep pushing out fresh contents if you don’t want the people to forget you. You will agree with me that music lovers are constantly demanding that music acts stay on top of their game. So, one has to be ready for what could be thrown at him any time. I am 100 per cent ready and steady to keep playing the game because I love this game. I know I have got the talent but I have to work hard to bring the best out of me all the time.
Talking about your talent, some artistes find it easy to write songs; others simply buy and make the best of it. Which one do you find more interesting?
I am a very good writer, so I find it interesting when I write my music. To be honest, I have never bought songs from anyone, and I don’t have an issue buying one. Writing my songs is truly a beautiful experience because you get to pour your heart and speak your truth. It gets more interesting when you feel connected to the song the moment you wrote the first line. It gets better as you keep doing it.
Tell us what you feel about your music career at this stage and do you think you are living your dreams?
I feel am doing great and I really believe I am already living my dream. While I am not where I want to be yet but working on my craft and paying attention to my music will keep me above whatever the industry may throw at me.
Some people say you look like L.A.X and you sing like him. Do you see things like that?
Now this question cracks me up. I don’t really see any of this resemblance. I am just Paulachino but I give massive respect to L.A.X because I am a big fan of his work. I have a lot of latest works that I don’t even know which to put out next, and honestly I am open to any collaboration.
