No directives to join NARD strike ― MDCAN chairman

Contrary to speculations going around the country that other medical unions in the Health sector would join in the ongoing National Association of Residents Doctors (NARD) strike action, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCAN) said there is no directive yet towards such as been rumoured.

The Chairman of MDCAN, Federal Medical Center (FMC) Kebbi State chapter, Dr(Mrs) Saka Eletu Sadia disclosed this to Tribune Online in an interview in her office, on Thursday.

Dr Saka stated that the possibility of MDCAN going on strike action to press home issues bothering it cannot be ruled out but for now, no directives towards that and she prays nothing of such should happen to avoid the total collapse of the Health sector in Nigeria.

She wondered why the Nigerian government had refused to copy from other countries of the world with robust Health systems for their citizens, adding that why must government wait until Health workers in Nigeria take strike actions as the last result?

Many Doctors according to her, have lost their lives to COVID-19 while saving lives of other people with nothing as compensation given by the government to the families who had lost their beloved ones to COVID-19, this is painful and abnormal, she said.

“Members of MDCAN are to go for a training conference at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, and the reports from the College is saying the College Hospital has lost three prominent Doctors to the COVID-19, the same thing at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), this is a sad moment in the lives of Medical Practitioners,” She expressed.

Dr Saka who is also a Consultant of Ophthalmologists appealed to the government to have a rethink and save the country’s Health sector from total collapse, adding that life is very important and sacrosanct.
