NIHOTOUR trains, empowers women, youths with starter packs

The Director-General, National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), Alhaji Nura Sani Kangiwa, has stated that the recent spate of trainings undertaken by the institute nationwide is to address the skill gaps inherent in the nation’s travel tourism and hospitality industry in the face of unemployment bedeviling the sector.

Kangiwa, who stated this in an address read on his behalf by the Director, Department of General Studies, Dr Taiwo Famogbiyele, at the Skill Acquisition and Empowerment Training Program for Women in Hair Braiding, Fixing and Styling organised by the South -West Zonal Campus of the Institute in Lagos, further noted that empowering women would provide them the opportunities for self-employment and thus fight poverty and hunger in the country.

He said that as part of the mandate of the Institute, it would continue to engage the vulnerable category of Nigerian youths and women in the provision of skills that would make them both employable and self-employed, stating that with the Institute’s campuses now present in the six-geo political zones of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, its trainings were now easily accessible and available at the doorsteps of every deserving Nigerian youth to be skillfully empowered.

In her goodwill message, Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf,  who was represented by Director of Tourism Promotion in the State Ministry, Mrs Ada Oni, promised continued support of the state government to NIHOTOUR in its efforts at empowering women and youths in the state to be useful and functional members of the society.

Also speaking at the occasion, Ambassador Nneka Issac-Moses of Goge Africa, who applauded the initiative of NIHOTOUR to empower women via skill acquisition said the economic value associated with skillful manpower product is unquantifiable and the import, beyond local boundary, urging beneficiaries of the training to make judicious and best use of skills and knowledge they have acquired.

In his goodwill message, a member of Board of Trustees, Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN), Mr Frank Meke, called for seed money for the training beneficiaries. He stressed further that supporting them with a token or equipment of the trade will fast track their impact and contributions to the economy.

In a short remark, the National President, Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters of Nigeria (ATBOWATON), Mr Gani Tarzan Balogun, who commended NIHOTOUR for the timely skill acquisition initiative, also appreciated the presence of stakeholders from core and allied tourism industry at the event and promised to donate unspecified numbers of hair dryers to the beneficiaries.

In her remark, the Coordinator and Head of the South-West Zonal Campus of NIHOTOUR-Lagos, Mrs Chinyere Uche-Ibeabuchi said through the competent, dedicated and committed staff  and leadership the institute is currently blessed with crop of high-level skill training programmes to enhance the quality of manpower needed for the travel tourism and hospitality industry in the country to sustainably grow.

Uche-Ibeabuchi who lauded the commitment and support giving to the zonal campus by key stakeholders in the industry, also noted that the encourage was an healthy one that has kept the institute on the feet to continue to re-inventing newer ways and strategy to up their game at bringing empowerment programme to the Nigeria.

“We sincerely appreciate the urgency attached to all our invite to grace our event despite the short notice and your promptness is an evidence of commitment towards a greater tourism industry, stating that this level of cooperation is what is desired beyond anything to make Nigeria proud.”
