Two boats on Tuesday evening, while violating the Federal Government directive on night travelling, capsized along the Lagos lagoon around 7:24 pm. The occupants of the boats, nine males and a female were rescued alive by the Marine Police who were on a routine patrol.

In a statement issued very late on Tuesday by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), the boats captains and passengers have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

According to the statement that was signed by LASWA General Manager, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel: “On the 28th of July, 2020 distress calls were received from the State Emergency number at about 7.30 pm.

“It was reported that a boat had capsized at about 7.24 pm while en route Ikoyi from Illashe. The boat appears to have collided with an unidentified object. Also, a second boat with seven passengers was also found to be in distress.

“A total of 10 persons, nine adult males and a female, were involved in the incident and were rescued from the water alive by the Marine Police, who were the first responders.

“The emergency and regulatory authorities carried out initial investigations and have handed over the boat captain and passengers to the Marine Police for further investigation and sanctions.”
