FILE PHOTO: The Nigerian diplomat being maltreated by Indonesian Immigration officials
A group, Stakeholders of Nigerians in Asia has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the alleged continue maltreatment, inhuman and xenophobic attacks on Nigerians across the Asia continent.
The development is coming on the heels of the manhandling, torturing and handcuffing of a senior Nigerian Diplomat in Jakarta, Indonesia over the weekend, which the ministry of foreign affairs condemned in a statement on Sunday.
Arising from an emergency meeting of the Stakeholders of Nigerians in Diaspora in Asia continent, the body urged the Nigerian government to save her citizens from the continued harassment, intimidation and maltreatment being subjected to by some countries in the Asian continent.
This was contained in a statement by the Coordinator of the Group, Comrade Kingsley Nwankwo and made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti from Malaysia.
The statement was titled, “The Continued Harassment, Intimidation and Unlawful Arrest of Nigerians in Asian Countries and The Need For President Muhammadu Buhari’s Urgent Intervention ”
Nwankwo explained with regret that many Nigerians are currently languishing unjustly in many prisons across Asia.
According to him, “The latest barbaric and inhumane treatment of a Nigerian Diplomat by some staff of Immigration Department in Indonesia is not only one of such unpleasant and ugly treatments being faced by some Nigerians across Asia but it has also become a continued practice across the continent.
“However, it is on this note that, we want the Nigerian government especially, the Director-General Diaspora Organisation, Permanent Secretary, Minister of Foreign Affairs and President Muhammadu Buhari to write the Indonesian Government on the need to sanction the officers involved in the maltreatment of Nigerian diplomat in the country in order to protect Nigerians in the Asian countries.”
