Nigerian workers will become slaves if the bill is passed into law ― NLC, TUC, others

Published by

The Nigerian Labour Union (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other Labour Unions have said that Nigerian workers will become slaves if the proposed bill to remove minimum wage from exclusive legislative list to concurrent list is passed into law.

They said that immediate action should be taken by the necessary and relevant bodies in the country as they are ready to resist the bill to the last end.

The Labour Unions made this known having staged a protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly to express their dissatisfaction towards the bill.

Speaking at the protest ground, The Lagos Chairman, Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Gbenga Ekundayo said they will shut down the economy if the National Assembly fails to step down the bill.

Gbenga added that they will also stop the states from enjoying federal allocation as they are set to pay Nigerian workers as they like.

“We are here to resist the bill sponsored by Garba Datti Mohammed to remove minimum wage from exclusive legislative list to concurrent list.

“We are saying no to the bill and they must stop it immediately.

“If they fail to stop that bill, as workers we are ready to shut down the economy of the nation until the needful is done.

“They will not continue to enjoy Federal Allocation as states and now tell us they want to pay as they like.

“Minimum wage is a federal allocation. They should stick with the federal law which is the minimum wage. No double standard.

On the implication of the bill, if passed into law, Ekundayo said that the states will now be at liberty to pay as they claim they are capable to pay.

“What that means is that Nigerian workers will be treated as slaves in Nigeria. And what that would translate to eventually is insecurity because the bedrock of security is social security.”Ekundayo noted.

Assistant General Secretary, Nigerian Labour Congress, Chris urged the Speaker, Federal House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila to resist the controversial bill as it is capable of painting the National Assembly dark.

Chris said that the ‘irresponsible bill’ will make the Green Chambers noxious, irresponsible and wicked.

He, therefore, noted that the preparedness of the Labour Unions to resist the passage of the bill to the last as they have done such in the past.

“Femi Gbajabiamila should act immediately. in making sure that the irresponsible bill is thrown away.

“This is because it is capable of making the National Assembly noxious, irresponsible, wicked and should not allow the National Assembly to be benched by such Bill.

“So, we urge him to act responsibly and also urge other members of the National Assembly to distance themselves from this ignominy.

“This is because as organized labour in Nigeria we are prepared to resist them to the last. We will not allow it to happen. Just like we have resisted it in the past, we will also resist this one.” He said.
