High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, His Excellency, Mr Abhay Thakur, has disclosed that Nigeria will receive more coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines from his country in a few months time.
Tribune Online gathered that the Nigerian Government received 100,000 doses of Covishield COVID-19 vaccines from India on April 6, 2021.
Abhay stated that India and Nigeria share so many things in common even as both are the largest democracy in the world and the largest democracy in Africa respectively; hence, should be able to help each other in terms of needs.
He made this disclosure known at the Ambassadorial briefing organised by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, on Monday in Lagos.
The Commissioner noted the relationship between the two countries further enhance understanding and acknowledgement of each other’s differences.
Thakur explained that Nigeria is the best to engage with if engagement is to be done in Africa.
“In a few months time, I want to assure that the Nigerian Government will receive more coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines in addition to the already delivered 100,000 doses.
“This is so important because we both share similar things historically and as a matter of fact, India is the largest democracy in the world while Nigeria is the largest democracy in Africa.
“Whenever engagement comes to bear on the African continent, Nigeria is the best even as there is need for a high level of engagement between India and Nigeria frequently,” Abhay said.
Speaking on the development, The Director-General, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Prof Eghosa Osaghae commended the Indian Government for being poised to partner with Nigeria to becoming a vaccine production country as Nigeria is deficient in the production of all its needed vaccines.
Prof Eghosa said that the relationship with other country partners will solidify the country’s capacity to ensure socio-economic development and make our country stable; hence, enhance the welfare of the Nigerian citizens.
“The Indian Government said it wants to partner with Nigeria to become vaccine production countries. So, the point is not just to receive at this time that we are not able to provide all the vaccines that we need.
“The greater goal is to see that we become a vaccine producing country and His Excellency has pledged that India is quite willing to collaborate with Nigeria.
“It is very clear and obvious that what we are looking for is what can solidify our capacities to ensure socio-economic development and make our country stable.
“It is about the welfare of Nigerian citizens and I think that all these things are geared towards ensuring that Nigeria is able to build the capacities that would make us all of us have a better life, more prosperous,” Prof Osaghae stated.
