Nigeria to host UNWTO global tourism conference in 2022

Nigeria has received another boost in global tourism attraction as it received the approval to host the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Regional Conference in 2022.

The Information and culture minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed revealed this in Sal Island, Cape Verde, at the end of a meeting with the Secretary-General of the UNWTO, Mr Zurab Pololikashvili where it was confirmed.

The minister said the Nigerian tourism and creative sector was chosen based on its comparative advantage and strong points of Nigeria in the areas of films, music, fashion and the creative industry.

He said Nigeria is famous for its music, films, culture to boost the GDP of the nations during the rebasing of the nation’s economy recently that attract foreign exchange

It is no more news that the Nigerian music and movie industries have taken the African and global stage by storm with many Nigerian artists gaining global recognition, among those are Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage and WhizKid who won the latest Grammy Awards in different categories.

The minister recalled that Burna Boy, a Nigerian Afrobeat star recently sold out at the 02 Arena in London, same as his compatriots Whizkid, Davido and Tiwa Savage at different occasions globally.

According to the Secretary-General of UNWTO, Mr Pololikashvili “the regional conference, to be hosted in Nigeria in 2022 would focus on tourism and the creative industry and areas of mutual interests for the creative industry to thrive.

It would be recalled that the 61st edition of the UNWTO Commission for Africa conference was held in Abuja, Nigeria in 2018.
