President Muhammadu Buhari has been enjoined to deal with Nigeria as his constituency, rather than rely on certain unknown persons, whose interest remained obscure to national interests.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Muazu Magaji, said this, on Wednesday morning, while fielding questions on Channels television and monitored by our correspondent.
The national stakeholder of the party said such development was disturbing for a president, who must appeal to national interests, rather than a small group.
He said the All Progressive Congress-led federal government needed to open up the nation’s democratic institution for public appraisals of the cabinet ministers, to ascertain their performances, based on the government’s key indicators.
The national stakeholder of the All Progressives Congress said he was disturbed that the president considered an unknown persons as his constituents when the nation was at his disposal, to source information on key performances of the ministers.
He spoke against the background of the Senior Special Adviser to the President, Femi Adesina submission, that he had told the president of the challenge of hunger in the land and the president said, he already knew through his constituents.
Alhaji, Muazu Magaji, who was a former member of the APC Presidential Council, noted that the argument that ministers are only accountable to the president and not the people who elected the president was unfounded because the people determined the path in a democracy.
His words: “There was a haggling whether it was the president or the people that should actually ask for accountability from the people.
“I honestly believe that in a democracy the system is such that everything revolves around the people.
“The President appointed these people to help him deliver, the only way reliable feedback can be obtained is from the people.
“I was a bit scared when I heard that at some point the president said ‘I know this one or I get feedback from my constituents, the president has the whole Nigeria, as his constituents.
“I know that the president knows a lot but there is a lot but believe me there are a lot of things that have changed when he was the Head of State; when he was a military leader; when he was in PTF, there are a lot of dynamics that have changed and Nigeria has degenerated a lot, to actually warrant very close supervision of projects.
“I want to say that the constituents giving the president feedback, we do not know them, we do not know who they represent, we do not know what their interest is, they represent.
“As an institution, we need to open up and democratically discuss the key performance indicators of these ministers give us the opportunity to evaluate them, the president may or may not use our own evaluation because he has other institutions to evaluate them but this is very important in a democracy.”
