Nigeria needs to strengthen justice, governance institutions, others for nation-building ― Senator Anyim

Published by

Former Secretary to Government of Federation (SGF) and former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, has called on the Federal Government to continue in strengthening justice and governance institutions and democratic ideals for nation-building.

According to him, Nigerians needs to strive hard through collective engagement and sincerity of purpose to ensure that all the debilitating factors that are inimical to nation-building are eradicated from the political, economic and social spaces for the good of all.

Chief Anyim stated this while delivering a lecture titled “POLITICAL SUCCESSION & NATION BUILDING IN NIGERIA: PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES” at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka during the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Distinguished Annual Public Lecture.

Anyim who insisted that every institution/organization contributes in a very important way to nation-building noted that whenever there is succession turbulence in institutions of the nation, it affects the health of the nation.

He then described lack of continuity of the building blocks, the regular unlawful termination of governments and unnecessary policies and programmes summersault as the bane of nation-building in Nigeria.

Anyim further added that a country is not just a nation because it has political independence, but the ability of its leaders to nurture programmes, policies and platforms that promotes the economic, social and political advancement of the entity for the benefits of its citizens.

According to him, the programmes, policies and platforms constitute the building blocks of the nation.

Anyim, however, noted that the importance of an efficient, transparent, fair and equitable political or leadership succession process in any nation can never be overemphasized as nation-building remains a continuous process.

The former SGF further condemned in its entirety any form of military intervention in the political administration of the nation. According to him, the transition from civilian-to-civilian administration in Nigeria has also been rancorous, grossly violent, manipulative and in many cases, threw up the wrong outcomes where the wrong men for the jobs emerged and retarded the progress of Nigeria.

He also maintained that there is hope for Nigeria irrespective of the challenges it’s facing as a nation.

Anyim advocated that political power be separated in any given nation in order to prevent abuse of power and to hold men accountable for infractions that may be detrimental to nation-building. According to him, it is the only way the journey to nationhood can be progressive.
