Niger: HYPPADEC ends 20 years of inadequate water supply in Borgu LGA

The Managing Director of Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing total overhaul and rehabilitation of the New Bussa water works.

During an inspection of the project in the Borgu local government area of Niger State, Yelwa noted that the waterworks, which had been dormant for over 20 years, are now experiencing a significant revival and is approximately 60% complete.

Yelwa also instructed the contractors to adhere to the terms of the contract to ensure timely completion, aiming to commission the project before the end of October this year. The successful completion of the project would bring an end to the 20-year water crisis faced by the residents of New Bussa.

During the inspection, the HYPPADEC Boss visited the high lift, low lift, administrative block, pumping stations, and the 10-million-litre reservoir of the waterworks. He described the progress as unprecedented and commended the Federal Government for approving various projects for all the HYPPADEC states.

Yelwa expressed confidence that the well-equipped project would be able to meet the water demand of the people by effectively distributing storage tanks to more areas, benefiting over 16,000 households.

He emphasized the need for intervention in New Bussa, which lacks access to potable water and electricity despite hosting the Kainji Dam. He also highlighted similar ongoing projects in Yauri, Kebbi State (at a cost of N1.5 billion), as well as in Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau states.

In his remarks, the Acting Managing Director of Niger State Water and Sewage Corporation, Engineer Gimba Yisa, explained that the project involves a holistic rehabilitation, including the installation of new pumps, high and low lifts, re-treatment units, a new booster station, and general maintenance of pipelines to enhance service delivery.

Yisa mentioned that the host community and stakeholders have been educated and mobilized to ensure the payment of water bills on a monthly basis, which is crucial for the maintenance and sustainability of the project for the benefit of the citizens.

During an interview, one of the contractors, Utare Kokobisi, disclosed that some valves had been replaced, while others needed to be ordered, resulting in delays.

However, he assured that the project would be completed according to the deadline and specifications. Once finished, the waterworks will be capable of supplying 500,000 litres of water per hour.
