NGO offers free eye care treatment to 835 indigent people in Taraba

A non-government organisation, Reaching the Unreached Refugees and Peace Initiative(RURPI), on Tuesday, said it has offered free eye care service to 835 indigent people in Taraba State in recent times.

Director of the organisation, Dr Theophilus Sôngo disclosed this at the flag-off of the free eye care service at the Jalingo Local Government Secretariat Staff Clinic, where 518 people benefited from the two-day free health programme.

According to him, 317 indigent people had earlier benefited from the same exercise in Sunkani in the Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of the state.

Sôngo told the gathering that Taraba was one of the states in the country with high cases of eye-related diseases because of poor hygiene services.

He explained further that “the United Nations (UN) has the target to take one billion indigent people out of avoidable blindness worldwide by 2030 and RURPI has keyed into the goal.

“Already, 317 people had earlier benefitted from the free eye care service in Sunkani and 518 people are going to benefit from our intervention here in the next two days.

“For some time now, our organisation has joined the global community to fight neglected tropical diseases in our local communities to boost economic productivity.

“It is imperative to state here that our core mandate is to reach out to the poor among us, provide humanitarian service to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugees as well as intervention in peace initiative programmes,” he said.

The Director called on the government, individuals and donor agencies to assist the organisation to carry out free surgeries for people with eye cases that need a surgical operation.

Some of the beneficiaries including, Abubakar Musa and Dorcas Daniel commended RURPI for the free eye treatment and called on other organisations to intervene in similar health-related areas that could help indigent people in society.
