NGO empowers 1000 youths, widows, others in Abuja

A Non-governmental Organisation, Abuja Royal Women Empowerment Initiative, has empowered over 1,000 youth, widows and other less privileged persons in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

President of the Initiative, Naomi Okomudo, speaking at the empowerment programme in Abuja, said while some would be presented with cash, others would receive starter packs and houses for retirees who are among the 1,000 beneficiaries.

She said her organisation was concerned at the recent report by the National Bureau of Statistics indicating that Nigeria is been rated as the poorest county with 7.9 million Nigerian Youths between the ages of 15 to 34 currently unemployed.

According to her, the gesture of her Initiative was part of the effort to reduce poverty and the high rate of crimes in FCT and Nigeria in General caused by youth unemployment.

She noted that with the empowerment would provide opportunity for many youths in FCT to be gainfully employed and be liberated from hardships.

Okomudo stated that the empowerment which cut across widows, farmers, youths, retirees and less privileged ones was in collaboration with TU-Capital a UN-affiliated organisation, adding that the programme was carried out more than three times yearly to ensure maximal reduction of crimes.

She said the organization would carry out adequate training and monitoring on beneficiaries to ensure success in their different categories of empowerment.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed joy calling on captains of industries and other Nigerians to take the cue by helping in alleviating poverty in the country, noting that government could not do it alone.

Some of the beneficiaries such as retirees got house and some students were given scholarship while funds was also given to Small and Medium Entrepreneurs to boost or start their businesses.
