The National Examinations Council (NECO) and various other stakeholders in Nigeria’s education sector have called on the public and private organisations as well as individuals to give a deserved support for the study of mathematics at all levels of education.
They made the call separately at the final of this year’s edition of Cowbellpedia Secondary Schools Mathematics Quiz competition held in Lagos last week.
The competition, an annual event with this year’s edition being the 21st in the series, is organized and sponsored by Promasidor Nigeria Limited, makers of Cowbell Milk as part of its social initiatives towards education development in the country.
A student of Zionfield Pinnacle School, Ikorodu, Lagos State, Oghenero Ologe, won the senior category while Michael Enehizena from the Scholars Universal Secondary School, Ota, Ogun State, won the junior category.
They were both rewarded for their efforts with N2 million each, a certificate of excellence and will also enjoy an all-expense-paid excursion abroad.
Speaking at the event, the acting registrar of NECO, Mr Abubakar Gana, who was represented by Mr. Stephen Adebunmi, said mathematics is central to the development of human and nation’s capacity, hence the need for meaningful support for the subject in schools.
While commending Promasidor for organising the competition, he congratulated the winners and other finalists, urging them not to rest on their oars.
In their separate remarks, Messrs Oladipo Olatunde and Saheed Ogunlaja, both teachers with The Ambassador College, Ota and Zionfield Pinnacle School, Lagos respectively, said the study of mathematics, especially from primary to secondary school levels, would need to be more encouraged in the country as the understanding of the subject would enhance students’ knowledge of every other subject.
Earlier in his remarks, the managing director of Promasidor, Mr. Anders Einarsson, said the company is investing hugely in education because of the belief that good education is the best legacy to bequeath to the children.
