NDLEA seized N60bn worth of illicit drugs in two months ― Marwa

Buba Marwa has disclosed that the agency had seized illicit drugs worth over N60 billion in the last two months, in the country.

The NDLEA boss who spoke in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital on Thursday during an event tagged, ‘Walk Away from Drugs’ organised by the State Ministry of Justice, said there was no challenge more worrisome than the menace of drug abuse in the country.

He maintained that the security challenges such as kidnappings, killings, banditry and others, bedevilling the country would be drastically curtailed if efforts are coalesced at preventing the use of illicit drugs.

According to him, “Insurgency, kidnapping and banditry are peculiar to some certain parts of the country, but drugs are universal, it has no boundary, no respect for ethnicity or religion.

“The menace is worrisome, that within the last two months, more than N60 billion worth of illicit drugs have been seized and perpetrators arrested and prosecuted. If access to drugs is prevented, criminality can be reduced by 50 per cent in the country.”

While calling on stakeholders to intensify the campaign against the use of illicit drugs, especially among youths, Marwa advised parents to make the presentation of drug certificate a prerequisite before giving their daughters and sons hands in marriage.

“Drug use is in every single community in the country. It has reached a very frightening dimension in Nigeria and I believe this suggestion will be the beginning of reducing drug usage and abuse and the prevailing economic effects on the nation, ” he said.

The Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, who was represented by his deputy, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi restated the commitment of his administration to reducing drug abuse in the state, urging participants to come out
with implementable plans towards putting an end to the menace in society.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Wale Fapounda pointed out that the programme was organized following the alarming rate of cases of crimes being perpetrated by people under the influence of illicit drugs.
