NDLEA secures 18 convictions in 11 months in Gombe

A total of 18 convictions have been secured by the Gombe State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) between July 2019 and June 2020 for various illicit drug-related offences.

Gombe State Commander of the NDLEA, Mrs Nnodim Akuchinyere, gave the statistics to Journalists in Gombe, on Thursday, during a press briefing to commemorate the 2020 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which is being celebrated on 26th June of every year with the theme for 2020 as ‘Better Knowledge for Better Care’.

Mrs Nnodim Akuchinyere said that during the period under review, a total number of 127 suspects were arrested Comprising 120 males and 7 females for various illegal possession of banned drugs in accordance with the relevant laws on drugs.

According to her, 88 drug clients were successfully counselled rehabilitated and reintegrated into the society and some were now gainfully employed and became responsible citizens in their various communities during the period under review.

The NDLEA Commander further said that a total quantity of 2,112.776 kgs of various illicit drugs was seized from circulation explaining that out of the quantity seized, 743.64 kgs were cannabis Sativa, 340.408 kgs was psychotropic substances while 1,056.388 kgs comprised Suck and die chemical and other banned drugs.

She, however, appealed to the general public to expose every drug dealer in their environment by giving useful information to NDLEA just as she advised parents and guidance to know the types of friends their children and wards keep, identify and report any change in their behaviour for early intervention.

It is expected that on June 26th various activities will be organised to observe the day but in strict compliance with the COVID-19 pandemic prevention protocols.
