NDLEA arrests 2,193 suspected drug dealers in Edo, confers grand ambassador against drug abuse on Oba of Benin

Determined to stem the rising cases of the cultivation of cannabis sativa popularly called marijuana, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has conferred the title of Grand Ambassador Against Drug Abuse on the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba Ewuare 11.

The Edo State Commander of NDLEA, Mr. Buba Wakawa who disclosed this Thursday during a visit to the palace of the Benin monarch said that 2,193 suspected drug dealers made up of 1,636 males and 557 females were arrested by the agency between January 2015 and March 2022.

Besides, Wakawa said that during the period, 486,307.314 kg of cannabis sativa, 1,953.68 of psychotropics, 34.767kg of methamphetamine, 1.871 kg of cocaine and 0.212 kg and 0.212 kg of heroin for a grand total of 488,297.844 kg or 488 tonnes.

Continuing, he noted that 183 farms totalling 209.67142 hectares were destroyed just as 213 the anti-drug body secured 223 convictions while 256 cases are still pending at the Federal High Court.

The Edo NDLEA boss said that royal fathers have a role to play in the crusades against drug abuse and cultivation, adding that it was cause for concern that Edo with very good fertile land is now been used for the cultivation of illegal drugs.

Elated by the award, Oba Ewuare 11 said: “Being conferred as the Grand Ambassador Against Drug Abuse is a big responsibility. As royal fathers, we will do our best.”
