NDE DG, Nuhu Abubakar Fikpo
As part of efforts to address unemployment in Nigeria, the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) on Thursday said about 40 graduates in Ondo State have been recruited and deployed to various organisations under the Graduate Attachment Programme (GAP) of the agency
The Director-General of the NDE, Mallam Nuhu Fikpo, who disclosed this during the flag-off/orientation programme for the Phase II of the Graduate Attachment Programme (GAP) in the state, said the scheme was put in place to assist fresh graduates of tertiary institutions to undergo tutelage and to provide them with transient jobs.
Fikpo who was represented by the Ondo State Coordinator of NDE, Mr Bode Ogunyankinnu, said the training will also prepare the beneficiaries for proactive and productive performance in carrying out their assignment in the various places of attachment that may or would lead not only to their retainment but also discovering themselves for self-employment.
He disclosed that one of the strategies adopted by the agency to mop the teeming unemployed youths from the streets is through its job creation and generation through the transient jobs.
He said apart from providing transient employment opportunities for graduates, the programmes will also help to enhance their employability, reducing restiveness among the youth and the rate of long-term unemployment caused by curtailment of employable entrants into the labour market.
He said the orientation exercise was to expose the participants with proper insights not only on the code of conduct of the GAP and NDE’s expectations but also on the immense benefits of their participation.
He said: “The NDE has come of age in the implementation of its various schemes and programmes and the onerous task of addressing youth unemployment in the country.
“One of the strategies being adopted by the NDE in its job creation and generation is through the transient jobs that are designed to mop the teeming unemployed from the street.
“We are here today for the orientation of another batch of Graduate Attachment Programme participants of the Special Public Works Department of the NDE in Ondo State.
“The GAP is designed to address the alarming level of graduate unemployment by providing them with transient jobs.”
According to him, the graduates are posted to public and private organisations relevant to what they studied in school, while the participants will be paid through a monthly stipend during the attachment period.
He assured that NDE will continue to strive in this direction to address the present unemployment situation in the country, despite the dwindling resources.
