NDDC donates science equipment to schools in Delta

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has, on Thursday, donated essential science equipment worth millions of naira to 10 selected secondary schools in Delta State.

The Interim Administrator of the NDDC, Mr Efiong Akwa, unveiled the donation in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area.

Akwa said that the aim was to facilitate the effective teaching and learning of science subjects in the schools.

He noted that science and technology were pivots to achieving sustainable societal growth, hence the need to encourage the young ones to study sciences. He said that 46 schools across the region would benefit from the Commission’s initiative.

“No society has ever developed in a sustainable manner without the development of its science and technology. They are keys that turn the ignition of sustainable development which moves society forward.

“Today, we are donating essential science equipment to 46 schools across the region.

“The goal of this Commission is to facilitate the effective teaching and learning of science subjects to stimulate and foster the interest of the young minds in the study of sciences.

“We recognised that these are the future leaders and key players in the regional growth strategies and effort that will ensure the region reaps adequate reward from its natural riches.

“We also recognised the relevance of science education and its capacity to apply vital life-skills to everyday activities hence the need to equip our laboratories with a modern science experiment,” he said.

Akwa said that the commission had resolved to build educational infrastructure as a catalyst to addressing the socio-economic challenges in the oil-rich region.

The NDDC administrator said that the Commission had reviewed its Post-Graduate Scholarship scheme to include approved universities in Nigeria and urged young graduates in the region to take advantage of the opportunity.

He also said that the interventionist agency was in the process of engaging the Nigeria Local Content Management Board in the recruitment and placement of the Commission’s Post-Graduate scholars.

Also, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Delta. Mr Patrick Ukah represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr Ogoro Augustine thanked the NDDC for the donation.

Ukah said that education was a veritable tool for achieving growth and development in society. He assured that the equipment would be judiciously used for the purposes they are meant for.

“We commend the NDDC for its continuous support to governments in the region to provide quality education and others.

“Delta Government identifies with the NDDC. Delta has about 470 secondary schools, so the Commission should try and increase the scope of coverage,” he said.

Some of the benefitting schools in Delta included: Hussey College, Warri, Aboh Grammar School, Okotie-Eboh Grammar School, Sapele, Army Day Secondary School, Effurun and Notre Dame College, Ozoro, among others.
