The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, on Thursday, rose from its four days workshops in Birnin-Kebbi, the capital of Kebbi State on the Subnational Health Security Assessment of International Health and declared that 45,614 epidemic-prone diseases are likely in the 36 States of the Federation including the FCT, Abuja.
Leader of the team who is also the Deputy Director NCDC Head of International Health Regulation, Dr Oyeladun Okunromade in a statement averred that the current cases of COVID-19 pandemic have proved more than ever the need for health emergency preparedness at the state level to ensure local detention and local action to reduce the impact of the outback.
She expressed that unless control, early outbreaks are associated with high death counts, social destruction as well as financial and economic damages for individuals and communities.
She expressed further that as the NCDC begins the processes of finalising the health security in Kebbi State, Nigeria continues to records outbreaks of infectious diseases every year.
Dr Okunromade explained that the Sub-national Health Security Assessment is aimed to provide States with baseline data to inform the planning process to prevents spiderman and other public health threats.
This assessment according to her is an abridged form of the World Health Organization’s led Joint External Evaluation (JEE), adding that the assessment is a voluntary collaborative assessment for a country to find, rapid stop, and prevent public outbreaks.
“In taking action, the NCDC will work with Kebbi State to develop their priority areas and encourage a robust one health multisectoral coordination for planning and implementations,” She said.
She said further that NCDC has demonstrated its capability as a public Health Institution in Nigeria and its Sub-region coordinating Health Security among all sectors across the county.
