‘My wife wears tight-fitting trousers, transparent dresses, sleeps with men for money’

A woman, Sakirat Adekunle, recently dragged her husband, Hassan Adekunle before Ile Tuntun Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, praying that it end their marriage.

The plaintiff accused the defendant of abandoning his duties towards her and their children.

Sikirat also stated that his husband was a liar.

According to her, he always complained of paucity of fund and would starve her and their children.

Sikirat told the court that Hassan was a selfish person who would buy food from a food vendor and eat before she returned from work.

The plaintiff stated that she had caught him on some occasions eating when she returned home from work earlier than normal.

Sikirat further explained that she and her husband jointly paid their children’s school fees but that she was the one paying the larger share.

The plaintiff told the court she was fed up with their marriage and therefore pleaded for its dissolution.

Hassan gave his consent to divorce.

The defendant stated that the plaintiff was disobedient and always flouting his order.

He explained that she was in the habit of wearing skimpy and transparent dresses which he frowned on.

According to him, he had warned her times without number to desist from this practice, but that she turned deaf ears to him.

Hassan added that Sikirat was unfaithful to him. He stated that she had a chain of lovers who she slept with for money.

The defendant told the court that Sikirat’s father rather than chastise her, always gave her his support.

Hassan refused that the court grant Sikirat custody of their children.

According to him, she would indoctrinate their children with her loose lifestyle.

Sakirat giving her testimony said: “My husband is lazy and has refused to exploit avenues which would bring him more money like his colleagues.

“Hassan is always complaining of paucity of fund as a result of his lackadaisical attitude to life.

“He hardly has anything on him and as such was always passing the buck of his responsibility to me.

“He failed to provide our babies with their needs while I was pregnant and even after I had them.

“I went through an unpalatable experience after I had our second child.

“Hassan provided us with no bed or mattress. The baby and I slept on the floor for months which was obviously not convenient. I suffered body ache and pains.

“My husband hardly gives me and our children feeding allowance. He would swear he had not eaten for days but will buy food from food vendors and gulp it down before I return from work.

“I have caught him eating on some occasions I returned from work earlier than scheduled.

“Hassan will not only buy food, but will stack his plate with assorted meat.”

Sikirat added that “Hassan finds it convenient to lie and as such has failed to be a good example to our children.

“The more I call his attention to the effect this negative trait was having on our children, the worse he becomes. I take his words these days with a pinch of salt.

“My lord, my husband is indifferent to our children’s education. I always stay on his neck before he agrees to give me a meager amount to which I would add a meaningful sum to be able to pay their fees.

“My lord, I can’t go on like this under the guise of marriage. I desire a new lease of life.

“I, therefore, appeal to this honourable court to end our relationship and grant me custody of our children,” the plaintiff stated.

Hassan in his testimony explained thus: “No man can be happy having a rebellious woman like Sikirat under his roof.

“Sikirat has no regard for me. She is a slut. She treats me with contempt because she is sleeping with other men who give her money.

“I warned her against wearing skimpy and transparent dresses but she turned deaf ears to me. Sikirat goes about shamelessly in tight fitting trousers which show  her contours and also in dresses which reveal sensitive parts of her body.

“My wife has become a source of ridicule in our neighbourhood. People laugh at and scorn her whenever she’s passing by.

“My lord, I’m no longer interested living with a prostitute.

“I pray the court to dissolve our marriage and grant me custody of our children because Sikirat has failed to be role model to them,” the defendant said.

Ruling after he had listened to both parties, the court president, Chief Olasunkanmi Agbaje dissolved their union and granted custody of their children to the plaintiff.

The defendant was mandated to be responsible for their upkeep.

He ordered that their education and health care must be given upmost priority.
