Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, recently dissolved the wedlock between a couple, Isiaka Yussuf and his wife, Idayat Yusuff.
The former, who dragged the latter to court, complained of religious incompatibility.
Isiaka explained that he met and married Idiyat as a Muslim, but that she suddenly changed her religion to that of a traditionalist and started worshipping Osun deity.
Isiaka stated that he expressed his displeasure at the step taken by his wife but that she consistently called off his bluff.
According to the plaintiff, the defendant went too far when she brought her idol into their house and created a place for it in their sitting room.
The plaintiff told the court it was obvious his wife had no regard for him.
Isiaka stated that Idiyat has pushed him to the wall and that he could tolerate her no longer.
He, therefore, prayed that their marriage be dissolved.
The plaintiff further entreated the court to order his wife to remove her idol from his house.
Idiyat refused to come to court despite being served court summonses at different occasions.
Isiaka giving his testimony said that: “Idayat has no regard or respect for me. She has made our home unconducive for me. I can’t live under the same room with her any longer. I, therefore, pray that the court separate us.
“I saw a positive trait in my wife when we met which spurred my interest in her. Idayat as a Muslim regularly displayed the zeal to serve God. I was convinced she would raise and tutor our children in the Islamic way of life.
“I proposed to her and she readily accepted and she thus became my wife.
“If I knew then that the step I was taking would lead to regret, I would have cautioned myself.
“We got married and things went fine. Like I thought, my wife ensured our children had a balanced education by attending both formal and Islamic schools.
“My lord, years after we tied the nuptial knot and our marriage established, my wife suddenly began to change. She started raising questions about the Islamic faith and gradually withdrew herself from the practice.
“I called her attention to my observation, but she waved it aside.
“Idayat stopped observing the Islamic rites and later withdrew totally from the practice.
“She called off my bluff when I showed my displeasure at this and dared that I did my worse.
“My lord, before I knew it, my wife announced to me that she has changed her faith and that she is now a traditionalist. She became an Osun worshipper.
“We fought over this but she refused to go back on her decision. According to her, she has encountered peace since she embraced her new fate.
“Idayat’s act brought a strain into our relationship and we started living like cat and mouse.
“She brings into our home fetish objects which I don’t feel comfortable with and threatens me with them.
“My lord, Idayat made matter worse by bringing in a scary object, an idol which she called osun oracle and this she placed in a corner of our sitting room.
“She pours libation on this on daily basis as sign of worship.
“My lord, I don’t feel comfortable with that scary object in my house. My wife harasses me and always threatens me with it.
“I am fed up living under the same room with Idayat.
“I want this court to end our marriage and order her to remove the scary object from my house, “he stated.
Ruling, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade pronounced their marriage dissolved.
He handed their first two children to the plaintiff and the third to the defendant.
The plaintiff was directed to be responsible for the feeding, education and health service.
