My husband spends his income on liquor, descends on me with punches when drunk —Wife

A woman, Yetunde Babalola, recently dragged her husband, Wale Babalola before Oja Oba/ Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo Stat, praying that their wedlock be dissolved.

Yetunde had pleaded for divorce on the accounts of her husband’s irresponsibility and drinking habit.

The plaintiff explained that the defendant consistently failed in taking care of her welfare and that of their children.

Yetunde stated that Wale never showed interest in their children’s education. She said he always refused to pay their school fees.

She added that all he spent his income on was alcohol. According to her, Wale would drink, get drunk and beat her to a pulp.

The plaintiff told the court she could no longer stick her husband’s atrocities and therefore prayed the court to end their relationship.

Yetunde also entreated the court to grant her custody of their children, but make her husband responsible for their welfare.

Wale agreed that their marriage be dissolved but denied all that his wife said against him.

The defendant stated that he daily met his family’s needs and that their children’s education had always been his priority.

Wale confessed to beating his wife, but stated that he did that only thrice giving provocation as his excuse.

“I’m tired of my husband’s beatings. My body hurts every now and then because Wale never ceases to beat me like a goat. The more I complain, the more he hits me.

“My husband beats me because he hates that I complain about his faults. He is irresponsible and regularly shirks his responsibilities towards me and our children.

“Wale is indifferent to my survival and that of our children. He cares less if we live or die.

“My husband doesn’t know the effort I make to ensure our children are fed and clothed.

“The more I complain about his laxity with regards to our children’s education, the angrier he becomes.

“Wale always refuses to pay our children’s school fees giving paucity of fund as his excuse, but he would drink himself to stupour.

“My husband gets drunk almost everyday and when he is in this state, he would beat and almost kill me. I would have been a dead person long before now if our neighbours hadn’t come to my rescue at such moments.

“My lord, I want this court to dissolve our marriage. I’m tired of being treated like a goat.

“I further plead with the court to grant me custody of our children, but make my husband responsible for their upkeep, “the plaintiff stated.

Wale, responding to his wife’s testimony said: “My lord, all my wife said are lies. She came up with those lies to curry the court’s favour.

“I’m a loving husband and responsible father and have never defaulted in my duties towards my family.

“I don’t fail to give my wife feeding allowance, while our children are well-fed.

“I dreamt of our children becoming great in life and therefore never joked with their education. I’m the one paying their school fees and I do this as and when due.

“My lord, it is true that I beat my wife but it was only thrice. I beat her because she provoked me to anger, “the defendant concluded.

Giving judgement, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade dissolved their union and granted custody of their children to the plaintiff.

The defendant was ordered to be responsible for their general welfare and education and health care in particular.
