Oja Oba/ Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, recently put an end to the wedlock between a couple, Fola Taiwo and Deji Taiwo.
Fola who sought for the dissolution of her marriage explained that the greatest mistake she ever made was marrying her husband.
Fola in her divorce suit alleged that her husband was a habitual smoker and a drunk.
She stated that her husband did these in the presence of their child, which she said didn’t go down well with her.
According to her, they fought over this issue every now and then but he refused to change.
Fola added that Deji constantly neglected her welfare and that of their son.
The plaintiff stated that the defendant would leave home without making provision for their feeding and would return late in the night when their child was already in bed.
She stated that their child hardly knew his father because he was always asleep by the time he returned.
Fola further stated that Deji refused to change despite being counseled by her parents and his.
The plaintiff stated that the defendant called to inform her he was through with their marriage after abandoning her and their child for days without leaving a clue about his whereabouts.
Fola told the court she wanted to move on with her life and thus prayed that an end be put to their relationship.
Deji agreed that their wedlock be dissolved.
The defendant accused the plaintiff of starving him of sex.
He stated that she was irresponsible and always refused to cook despite the fact that he bought food for the home.
Deji explained that his wife was troublesome and fond of complaining. According to him, she’s hard to please.
The defendant accused the plaintiff of theft and claimed that his wife carted away all his property.
“My lord, I want my marriage to my husband dissolved. I no longer love him,” Fola said.
She went on, “I have never met a man as troublesome as my husband. Deji loves to have his way always and is therefore difficult to live with.
“My husband apart from indulging in the habit of smoking, drinks himself to stupour every day.
“Deji smokes like a chimney and this he does in the presence of our child. The more I discourage him from this practice the deeper he indulges in it not caring that our child may start to copy him.
“We fight over this always but it is obvious that he cared less.
“My parents and his have counseled him on this shameful behaviour but he has refused to change.
“My lord, my husband is also fond of coming home late. I have drawn his attention to the dangers of moving in the night times without number, but all have been to no avail.
“Deji left home for days without giving a clue as to his whereabouts. I was afraid and thought the worst might have happened to him. But he later called to inform me that he has left me and our child for good.
“My lord, I never enjoyed my marriage to Deji for a day. I have suffered enough in his hands and I pray that you end our relationship so that I can move on with my life,” the plaintiff pleaded.
Deji in response told the court that, “Fola is troublesome and has given me hell. I don’t want her to cut short my life. I, therefore, agree that you separate us,” the defendant said.
He went on: “My wife deprived me of my conjugal right. She consistently starved me of sex.
“I supply our home with foodstuff on regular basis but my wife refused to cook for me.
“What Fola is good at is to complain. She’s never satisfied nor show appreciation for whatever I do.
“My wife is a thief. I once travelled for a few days and on my return, I met an empty living room. Fola carried away our furniture and sold them.
“My lord, I’m sure I will be better off without my wife. She’s free to go,” he concluded.
