A woman, Rukayat Adeyefa, recently appealed to Oja Oba/ Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to put an end to the union between her and her husband, Teslim Adeyefa.
Rukayat who dragged her husband to court complained that he refused that she had rest of mind.
The plaintiff explained that the defendant neglected her and their only child.
She added that he often embarrassed and disgraced her by beating her to a pulp in the presence of neighbours and friends.
Rukayat stated that Teslim didn’t stop at this, but that he went as far as beating her parents in their house.
Rukayat told the court her marriage to Teslim had obviously failed. She thus pleaded for divorce.
Teslim acceded to divorce, accusing his wife of being troublesome.
The defendant explained that Rukayat’s parents rather than chastise her any time he reported her misdeeds to them, always took sides with her.
Teslim added that Rukayat’s mother was an ingrate. According to him, she always failed to show appreciation every time he gave her money for food.
Rukayat in her testimony explained that: “My lord, I’ve had no rest of mind since I got married to my husband. He refused to play his role towards me and our only child.
“I moved to my parents’ house a few months into our marriage because of his irresponsible lifestyle.
“Teslim neglected me despite knowing that I was pregnant with his child.
“He failed to give me feeding allowance. Neither did he give me money for ante natal care.
“I automatically became my parents’ responsibility. They did all in their power to ensure I carried the pregnancy safely till I put to bed.
“My husband hardly came to check on me throughout this period and didn’t give me a dime.
“My parents decided I moved back to his house after I put to bed. We held our child’s naming ceremony at my husband’s place. I decided to stay back so that we could live together again as a family, but I later realised that I made a grave mistake.
“Teslim took to beating me. He would beat me and not stop until neighbours come to rescue me from his hands.
“He went on like this for months. My lord, I decided to move back to my parents’ house on realising that he was not ready to change and that he could possibly kill me.
“Teslim full of rage came to my parents’ house and forced himself into their apartment.
“He descended on my parents with heavy blows for daring to keep me and our baby in their custody.
“A family meeting was held after his disgraceful act and he was warned never to step my parents’ compound.
“My lord, Teslim not yet done, came back to beat my mother and almost killed her.
“Teslim has disgraced me enough. I entreat this court to rule that we go our different ways but make him responsible for the upkeep of our child, ”the plaintiff begged.
Teslim in his testimony said, “My lord, I pray you grant Rukayat her wish.
“I have never seen a woman as troublesome as my wife. We changed accommodation very often because she always refused that peace reign in our marriage and in every compound we lived.
“The more I reported her to her parents, the worse she became because her parents were always taking sides with her.
“Rukayat never for once saw reason with me because her parents were always indulging her. Anytime we had a misunderstanding, she would pick her bag and leave for her parents’ house.
“We never experienced any intimacy in our marriage because Rukayat’s parents didn’t let us be. They were always meddling in our affair.
“My mother-in-law is an ingrate. I deny myself a lot of comfort in order that I might take care of her.
“I gave her feeding allowance on regular basis, but she failed to appreciate my effort and the sacrifice I was making.
“I have had enough of my wife and her family’s atrocities. I don’t wish to have anything to do with them again except having access to our child, “Teslim stated.
Giving his judgement, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade ruled that their marriage was dissolved.
He awarded custody of their child to the plaintiff and ordered the defendant to be responsible for his welfare.
Both were advised to maintain peace.
