My husband is sleeping with a woman older than him ’cos she gives him money’

A woman, Omotilewa, has dragged her husband, Ifedayo, before Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking that it dissolve their wedlock on the account of irresponsibility and infidelity.

Omotilewa told the court that Ifedayo neglected her welfare and that of their children.

The plaintiff explained that the defendant would travel for days and fail to give her and their children feeding allowance.

She also said that he hardly slept at home when he was around.

Omotilewa stated that she later discovered that Ifedayo was dating a woman quite older than him, whom he referred to as his business partner and who always lent him money.

According to her, she usually takes this woman to the hotel where they would spend the night together.

Omotilewa further said that she moved out of her matrimonial home after her husband’s lover vowed never to stop her illicit affair with her husband.

The plaintiff added in her testimony that the defendant took to threatening her after she left him.

Omotilewa thus entreated the court to grant her custody of their children but make her husband responsible for their upkeep.

She also sought an order restraining him from harassing and interfering with his private life.

Ifedayo was not in court, although he was served court summonses.

Omotilewa, in her testimony, said: “My husband has failed me and our children.

“I agreed to marry him because I felt he would take good care of me and the children our marriage would produce, but he ended up disappointing me. We had a traditional wedding, and he paid my bride price.

“I started noticing a strange behaviour in him shortly after we got married. He soon changed and stopped being loving and caring like he was while we were courting. He would hardly give me his attention and always failed to meet my needs and his behaviour got worse when our children started coming.

“He was always travelling and would, on many occasions, leave us to starve.

“He would not give us feeding allowance and would fail to call to check on us.

“The more I complained, the more hardened he became. I took up the responsibility of feeding the home so that our children would not die of hunger. My husband hardly slept at home when he was around.

“I later discovered that he was seeing a woman whom he always referred to as his business partner. This woman, according to him always lent him money which he invested in his business.

“My husband always took this woman who is quite older than him to the hotel where they spent the night almost all the time. I got frustrated one day and confronted this woman.

“She admitted to dating my husband and vowed not to leave him. My husband also, to my chagrin, swore he would never end his relationship with his lover.

“He totally abandoned me and our children after this and left us to our fate. I later moved out with our children but he refused that I had peace of mind. He always comes to my house and shop to threaten me.

“I pray this court to end our marriage, grant me custody of our children and make him responsible for their upkeep.

“I further request an order restricting him from threatening and interfering with my private life.”

The president of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case and ordered a fresh hearing notice to be issued and served the defendant.
