Murder of member, wife: NBA Makurdi to boycott court sessions on Monday

The Makurdi branch of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) has declared next week Monday a mourning day following the gruesome murder of its member and wife by gunmen.

It also declared a boycott of courts within its jurisdiction.

NBA Makurdi branch chairman, Justin Gbajir stated this when he led his officials to pay a condolence visit to the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom also vowed that the branch is set to institute a court case against  Federal Government for its failure to protect the lives of Nigerians.

It will be recalled that gunmen on Tuesday night invaded Agbourgh Community in Makurdi town where they killed a legal practitioner, Moses Udam, his wife and an old blind man.

The NBA Makurdi chairman lamented that the Federal Government has failed woefully in the protection of lives and property as enshrined in section 24 sub (2) of the Nigeria Constitution.

They want the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on security of the country and sack all the service chiefs.

The lawyers also called on Federal Government to declare Fulani herdsmen as a terrorist group and also to establish a victim Support Commission with Victim Support Funds, as well as set up a North Central Development Commission.

According to Gbajir, “The Nigerian Bar Association will on Monday, December 21, 2020 boycott court activities. We urge the FG to always obey the rule of law and the extant laws, anything short of this is unacceptable.”

Responding, Governor Samuel Ortom reiterated his call on Federal Government to grant licence to Nigerians to own guns and protect themselves from invaders.

He reeled out the recent killings in the state including the killing of an agro-ranger who was allegedly murdered by herdsmen in a forest and his decomposing body discovered 10 days later.
